Autumn Tour UK/IRL 2014

A busy Autumn ahead with my first tour of Scotland and England – including the Perthshire Amber Festival, gigs in Edinburgh (incl. Edinburgh Folk Club) and also a visit to the Carlisle Folk & Blues Club in Cumbria to support the fabulous Lucy Ward and her band on Halloween night (I wonder should I dress up as a witch, or would that give a bad first impression? hmm).

In addition, I’m delighted to be included on another Roadworks Tours series – this time opening for Carrie Rodriguez (Austin, TX) at The Workman’s Club, Dublin and the Balor Arts Centre, Donegal.

Other gigs include hosting The Lark & The Robin monthly series at McGrory’s, Culdaff. November’s guests will be two critically acclaimed singer/songwriters from Northern Ireland – Ciaran Lavery and Matt McGinn. Ciaran recently launched his 2nd EP ‘Kosher’ to great success and Matt is just about to release his next album ‘Latter Day Sinner’.

Ciaran Lavery will also be joining myself and Seamus Devenny at McDaid’s Winebar, Ramelton on the 14th November.

See all dates here.

The Black Box, Belfast at the Open House Festival – June 2014

Myself and my husband, Seamus Devenny had the pleasure of opening for Ciaran Lavery for the launch of his Kosher EP at The Black Box, Belfast as part of the Open House Festival. A truely incredible night of music by Ciaran and his band and also the wonderful sound of Silences – I highly recommend checking out all of their music. A nice bonus afterwards too with some lovely reviews from Scott Edgar at Folk & Tumble and Cara Gibney at Creative Voices NI .

“Beautiful moments in there with Kate mastering guitar and ukulele accompanied by Devenny who’s undoubtedly a hugely talented string player” – Folk & Tumble

“Kate O’Callaghan with strong support from husband Seamus Devenny then took to the stage. Some feedback kicked in on the mikes as they were setting up to which Seamus announced “A long time ago in a galaxy far far away…” and a slight otherworldly feel was brought to the fore.

‘Don’t Think So’ started their set with up-tempo ukulele and good scratchy fiddle playing that kept up a pace as well as a melody.‘Painted Lady’ was a tale about the butterfly of that name that flies across from North Africa. Words aside, the fiddle playing was seriously like flaky wings and the touch of Moroccan/Algerian rhythm spoke volumes.

Another beauty was ‘My Dear’ which must have been written by Kate for Seamus; and if it wasn’t Seamy I would be asking who it is about jus sayin..  ‘Stone By Stone’ was a brand new song and it was the stand out for me. Because the audience were listening so well Kate and Seamus were able to open it by simply rubbing their palms together into their microphones; and then silk voices wrapped their hands, followed by warm guitar and violin. Kate’s voice was strong and the song was simply gorgeous. And so the set progressed. By the time Kate O’Callaghan had finished there was a healthy buzz in the candle-lit room full of people.” – Creative Voices NI

The Workman’s Club with Finbarr Doherty & The Henry Girls

Looking forward to playing in Dublin with Finbarr Doherty and the rest of his band. The gig will be a double bill with The Henry Girls, also from Co. Donegal. Both groups will be playing music from their new albums.

Skyscrapers

“…It fuses elements of folk and indie rock from both sides of the Atlantic, on introspective songs that embrace brevity as a rule of thumb except on the bluesy Don’t break up. One song even bizarrely namechecks English soccer team West Bromwich Albion in its title.”

– The Irish Daily Star August, 2011

Launched this summer as part of the Galway Arts Festival and the Earagail Arts Festival Finbarr Doherty’s new album ‘Skyscrapers’ was performed alongside Boston-based band Session Americana. The songs cover topics from selling skyscrapers to leaving behind a broken heart on a cheap Spanish holiday. Musicians on the album Campbell Owens, Liam Bradley, Seamus Devenny, Jennifer Kimball, Ry Cavanaugh, Kate O’Callaghan and Karen & Lorna McLaughlin.

His earlier music career saw him as lead singer/composer with the 33rd Hurricane (See Fanning Sessions). CDs included ‘Shotgun Blast’, distributed by EMI.

The Finbarr Doherty band features Billy Robinson, Seamus Devenny, Kate O’Callaghan and Gary Raymond.
